A technique to enhance stability and esthetics of an interim obturator

Abstract:
The rehabilitation of a hemimaxillectomy defect is more challenging than providing a conventional prosthesis. Maxillary obturators can be fabricated using various techniques. For this patient, a hollow obturator prosthesis was constructed by adding a bow and clasp along with an acrylic resin pad to provide additional support. The bow was made from 23-gauge stainless steel wrought wire and the clasp from 21-gauge. To enhance the esthetics, the interdental papilla was carved by eliminating the clasp arm from the primary anterior abutment. The compensatory retention, stability, and support were provided by the addition of the acrylic resin bow.
