Evaluation of Stathmin Expression in Different Oral Squamous Lesions: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study

Objectives:
Stathmin is a phosphoprotein involved in the functions of proliferation, differentiation, and cell migration through microtubules, and its increased expression has been reported in some tumors. The purpose of this study was to compare the level of expression of stathmin in different oral lesions.
Methods:
The present investigation aimed to characterize the expression profile of stathmin across a clinicopathological spectrum of 98 oral mucosal samples (between 2011 and 2018), ranging from benign hyperkeratosis (HK) to malignant squamous cell carcinoma available in the archive of pathology department of Shiraz Dental School.
Results:
The comparisons showed that the level of stathmin expression in the central/suprabasal epithelial layer in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) was higher than lichen planus (LP) (p-value = 0.044), in epithelial dysplasia (ED) was higher than HK and LP without dysplasia (p-value = 0.002), and in LP with dysplasia (LPD) was higher than HK and LP without dysplasia (p-value < 0.001).
Conclusion:
Phosphoprotein stathmin is more expressed in OSCC, ED, and LPD than in other lesions that have less dysplastic features. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate stathmin expression in oral LP (OLP) with and without dysplasia and oral HK, expanding its potential role as a marker of dysplasia in oral squamous lesions. Identifying the signal transmission system of this molecule and its molecular inhibitors can be promising in inhibiting tumor growth and therapeutic targets.
