[Carotid body tumors]

Glomus caroticum tumors (GCT) are rare, mostly benign paragangliomas and the clinical relevance stems from their complex anatomical relationship to vessels and cranial nerves. Their heterogeneous clinical presentation, potential hormonal activity and genetic associations require a differentiated approach to diagnostics and treatment, which is often not widely familiar because of their rarity. This article outlines the key diagnostic and therapeutic characteristics as well as current evidence-based management strategies to provide a practical, clinically relevant guide.
