A qualitative study exploring the support needs of caregivers to older adults with depression

Family caregivers provide care and support to older adults with depression. Unfortunately, without sufficient support, caregivers can experience negative outcomes that can threaten their abilities to remain in the caregiving role. Well supported caregivers can help older adults thrive in the community. The aim of this study was to explore the support needs of caregivers to older adults with depression.

The current study analyzed data that was collected using a qualitative descriptive approach to explore the experiences of family caregivers to older adults (>65 years) with depression. In-depth interviews were conducted with family members providing care at least once per week to an older adult with a clinical diagnosis of major or persistent depressive disorder. Interview topics included caregivers' experiences, needs, and wellbeing. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis.

11 caregivers participated. Two overarching themes described available and desired supports. Regarding available supports, caregivers drew upon their own personal resources, their social network, and the health care system. Regarding desired support, caregivers wished for more subsidized healthcare and social services for older adults with depression, healthcare navigation assistance, and to be included in the patient's treatment plan.

This study provides insight for clinicians and policy makers to implement strategies to enhance the care of older adults with depression and their caregivers. Strategies can help caregivers draw on existing resources and caregivers would like additional services to meet the needs of the person with depression, help navigate the system, and include caregivers in the treatment plan.
