Kinetic analysis with a Langmuir-type mechanism for sonochemical degradation of ionic surfactants

Abstract:
We investigated the initial degradation rates and rate constants obtained from the sonolysis of ionic surfactants with different charges and carbon chain lengths. We applied this sonochemical reaction to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism-a kinetic model for gas-solid catalytic reactions-and investigated the relationship between the adsorption of ionic surfactant molecules to the cavity interface region and the degradation efficiency. The adsorption-desorption equilibrium constant depended inversely on the pseudo reaction rate constant obtained from kinetic analysis and depended on the charge of the ionic surfactant. Based on sonoluminescence measurements in the same system, we also detail the effect of different parameters on the adsorption of ionic surfactants to the cavity interface region, such as the temperature reached during cavity collapse and the number of cavities.
