Summary
This study found that a multi-form magnesium supplement (Mg BT™) effectively increased serum magnesium and influenced synaptic plasticity and behavior in rats, similar to single magnesium forms. No adverse effects were observed.
Area of Science:
- Neurobiology
- Biochemistry
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Magnesium is vital for physiological and neurobiological functions.
- The specific biological impacts of different magnesium forms are not fully understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the systemic and neurobiological effects of a multi-form magnesium supplement (Mg BT™) against common single-form magnesium compounds (oxide, citrate, glycinate) in a rat model.
- To evaluate magnesium distribution, metabolic and synaptic markers, gene expression, behavior, and organ histology.
Main Methods:
- Male Wistar rats received daily gastric gavage of Mg BT™ or individual magnesium compounds (50 mg/kg/day elemental Mg) for 30 days.
- Evaluated endpoints included serum/tissue magnesium levels, glucose tolerance, synaptic proteins (synaptophysin, PSD95, drebrin), gene expression (NR2B, BDNF), behavior, and liver/kidney histology.
Main Results:
- Multi-form magnesium increased serum magnesium without altering glucose homeostasis.
- It modulated synaptic plasticity proteins and induced mild anxiolytic-like effects, with no changes in locomotion.
- No adverse histological findings were noted; renal CLDN-19 expression was preserved, indicating tubular integrity.
Conclusions:
- Supplementation with the multi-form Mg BT™ influenced systemic, behavioral, and molecular parameters in rats.
- Its effects were comparable to individual magnesium compounds under the tested conditions.
- The findings suggest Mg BT™ impacts multiple biological domains without causing adverse effects.
