Foodborne disease burden in Sweden with a One Health perspective

Abstract:
Foodborne diseases (FBDs) pose a substantial public health burden worldwide, yet their extent and drivers in Sweden have not been comprehensively assessed. Using a One Health framework, we estimated the national FBD burden from 2013 to 2022 and explored links to zoonotic sources and climate factors. We identified over 1.2 million cases, most unreported, corresponding to 37,665 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Campylobacteriosis accounted for the largest share of cases and disease burden, with strong correlations to poultry farm outbreaks and contaminated chicken meat, while salmonellosis ranked second in disease burden. Listeriosis caused relatively few cases, yet a disproportionately high disease burden. Increased temperature and precipitation were associated with higher annual incidence. Higher population-adjusted burden was observed in northern counties. These findings provide a deep understanding of FBD dynamics in Sweden and support the need for strengthened prevention and surveillance strategies across the food production chain.
