Executive Dysfunction in Children with ADHD and Sleep Problems: Does Physical Activity Matter?

Children with ADHD experiencing sleep problems also show poorer cognitive flexibility and less physical activity (PA). Low PA levels exacerbate daytime dysfunction, impacting cognitive flexibility in these children.

Purpose of the Study:

- 282 children with ADHD (ages 6-12) wore ActiGraph GT9X Link accelerometers for 7 days to measure PA and sleep.
- Sleep quality was assessed via the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and core EFs (inhibitory control, working memory, cognitive flexibility) were evaluated using Inquisit Lab™ 5.
Main Results:
- Approximately 60% of children with ADHD had sleep problems, characterized by longer sleep latency and poorer cognitive flexibility.
- Children with sleep problems engaged in less moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and were less likely to meet WHO PA guidelines.
- Self-reported sleep quality, sleep efficiency, daytime dysfunction, and MVPA adherence were significantly associated with EFs, with MVPA moderating the link between daytime dysfunction and cognitive flexibility.
Conclusions:
- Daytime dysfunction predicts reduced cognitive flexibility specifically in children with ADHD who have low PA levels.
- Further research is needed to explore if meeting MVPA guidelines can alleviate sleep problems and executive dysfunction in children with ADHD.
