Florem Iuventutis: The Enduring Human Longing for Youth
None:
The pursuit of youth has remained one of humanity's most enduring aspirations, shaping mythology, art, philosophy, and contemporary aesthetic plastic surgery. While biological and evolutionary explanations account for many aspects of this phenomenon, medieval theology offers a complementary perspective through Thomas Aquinas' concept of florem iuventutis ("the flower of youth"). In Summa Theologiae, Aquinas described the resurrected human body as restored to the state of ultimate perfection, representing the fullest flourishing of human nature rather than a specific chronological age. This Editorial explores the relevance of this theological concept to modern aesthetic plastic surgery. Rather than equating youth with superficial appearance, florem iuventutis is interpreted as a metaphor for vitality, integrity, and human wholeness. This perspective provides a philosophical framework for understanding why patients seek youthful appearance while reminding surgeons of their ethical responsibility to promote human dignity rather than unattainable perfection. Although rooted in Christian eschatology, florem iuventutis offers a timeless reflection on the enduring human longing for youth and the broader meaning of aesthetic practice.
