Early gestational diabetes mellitus: unravelling the Gordian knot

The optimal clinical approach to hyperglycemia in early pregnancy, less than overt diabetes mellitus, remains contentious. These differences are further compounded by a lack of consensus among the major pre-eminent governing health and endocrine organizations; therefore, the primary health care providers, who look to the experts for clarity, remain perplexed. This paper highlights some of these problems by (a) discussing some of the major controversies, (b), highlighting the disparity amongst major health bodies, (c) providing insights into the current challenges, and d) suggesting some potential ways forward.
