Charles Goldhamer and the Visual Record of Wartime Burn Care

The Second World War generated a distinctive population of aircrew survivors with severe burns of the face and hands who required prolonged reconstruction and rehabilitation. At Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, Canadian official war artist Charles Goldhamer portrayed this clinical world between 1944 and 1946. His works have often been interpreted as humane records of burn survivorship, but their historical significance is clearer when they are placed within the longer visual history of reconstructive surgery. This historical review compares six Goldhamer works in the Canadian War Museum with nineteenth-century surgical illustration and photography, the First World War records of Harold Gillies and Henry Tonks, and the operative drawings of Mollie Lentaigne at East Grinstead. Goldhamer did not inaugurate the visual documentation of disfigurement or reconstruction. His distinct contribution was to bring an established clinical-artistic tradition into an official national war-art programme and to emphasize rehabilitation, postoperative waiting, staged reconstruction, and the recovering patient rather than only deformity, technique, or final result. Museum inscriptions also provide case-specific information for selected sitters, including Flying Officer John Smith and Sergeant James F. Gourley. After 1945, clinical photography and professional medical illustration became the dominant means of surgical documentation, while Goldhamer returned to teaching and painting. His burn series therefore represents both continuity with earlier medical art and a distinctive wartime convergence of clinical record, portraiture, and public memory.
