Background:
With the rising geriatric population in India, the mental health needs of older adults have become increasingly complex. Nurses in eldercare facilities are at the forefront of managing these challenges, yet their lived experiences are underexplored. Aim To explore the perceptions of stress and challenges faced by Nurses while managing elderly mental health concerns in eldercare facilities.
Methods:
A qualitative study using a transcendental phenomenological approach was conducted among ten nurses from three eldercare facilities (including both destitute and paid homes) in Bengaluru. In-depth interviews were conducted using a semi-structured guide in multiple languages. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis supported by ATLAS.ti software, and five main themes with fourteen subthemes were derived.
Results:
Major themes included: (1) Providing care for elders with mental health concerns; (2) Challenges in caregiving and communication; (3) Managing behavioral and environmental concerns; (4) Impact on Nurses' physical and emotional well-being; and (5) Coping strategies, including relaxation and emotional support. Nurses reported feeling overwhelmed as a result of staff shortages, insufficient training, and frequent behavioral challenges among residents.
Conclusion:
This study highlights the urgent need for structured training, psychological support, and policy-level interventions to enhance Nurses' preparedness and well-being in eldercare settings. Addressing these challenges is critical to ensuring quality mental health care for the elderly.
