Antecedents affecting on exit from organizational hostage syndrome (Stockholm) in public hospitals

The present study aimed antecedents affecting on exit from organizational hostage syndrome (OHS) (Stockholm) in public hospitals.

This study used qualitative content analysis technique. In order to identify and select information-rich items, semi structured interviews were conducted with 21 managers, doctors, and nurses who have managerial work experience based on criterion-related purposive sampling method. To increase the accuracy of qualitative data, four criteria of validity, transferability, reliability, and consistency were used, and the findings were analyzed using thematic analysis through open, axial, and selective coding.

Antecedents of hostage syndrome in public hospitals included personal dimensions (personal characteristics, personal circumstances), contextual dimensions (social support, organizational culture, workplace policies, organizational climate, sociocultural attitudes) cognitive dimension (experience-based awareness, cognitive challenge), and emotional dimension (emotional action, emotional self-regulation, emotional damage).

The originality and value of this research lie in its in-depth exploration of the antecedents of OHS in a public hospital setting. This study fills that gap by identifying a range of antecedents that can influence an employee's ability to exit OHS, including personal, contextual, cognitive, and emotional factors. Moreover, this study offers valuable insights for policymakers and healthcare leaders, who can use the findings to develop more effective strategies for addressing and preventing OHS in public hospitals.
