Abstract:
Myocardial calcification is a rare but increasingly recognized complication of severe systemic illness, particularly sepsis and critical illness. We report 3 men who developed left ventricular myocardial calcification after septic shock or prolonged intensive care unit admission. In all cases, computed tomography identified the extent and distribution of calcium deposition, whereas cardiac magnetic resonance demonstrated nonischemic late gadolinium enhancement in corresponding segments. These cases illustrate the heterogeneous long-term consequences of postseptic myocardial calcification and highlight the complementary roles of cardiac computed tomography and cardiac magnetic resonance in diagnosis, tissue characterization, arrhythmic risk assessment, and follow-up.
