Purpose:
This study explored information, motivation, and behavioral skills needs related to sexual risk preventive behavior among early adolescents in Thailand to inform the development of school-based sexual risk prevention programs.
Methods:
A qualitative descriptive study was conducted in one suburban secondary school in Bangkok, Thailand. Data were collected through three focus group discussions with 20 early adolescents aged 12-13 years and individual interviews with three health education teachers. Semi-structured interview guides were developed based on the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model. Data were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using directed content analysis.
Results:
Four key categories were identified: (1) information needs, (2) motivation needs, (3) skill needs, and (4) learning delivery preferences. Adolescents demonstrated knowledge gaps regarding human immunodeficiency virus, sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancy, contraception, and the ability to identify credible sexual health information sources. Motivational influences included self-motivation, peer norms, family support, teacher involvement, and healthcare provider support. Participants also reported limited communication, refusal, negotiation, and decision-making skills to manage sexual risk situations. Participants preferred participatory learning approaches, including practice-based activities, real-life scenarios, short videos, interactive games, and accessible consultation channels with healthcare professionals.
Conclusion:
Findings demonstrate the importance of comprehensive sex education that addresses adolescents' informational gaps, strengthens motivational support, and develops essential behavioral skills. Integrating interactive learning methods and fostering collaboration among schools, families, and healthcare providers may inform the development of school-based sexual risk prevention programs for early adolescents.
