A curriculum-based program introducing mindfulness and reflection to GP trainees
Aim:
To explore participant's experience of a pilot, curriculum-based mindfulness and personal reflection program on the resilience levels and well-being of 3rd year trainee General Practitioners (GP's).
Methods:
3rd year trainee GP's were invited to participate in four morning sessions, plus one retreat day program which was incorporated into the trainees 3rd year curriculum. Volunteers from the intervention group were then invited to take part in a focus group aimed at exploring their experiences and perspectives in greater depth. The qualitative data gathered from the focus group was analysed using thematic analysis to identify common themes and insights.
Results:
The focus group identified a number of themes including; quality of programme delivery and content, the experience of a safe space, the relevance of the content to the wider GP role, the uptake of skills such as mindfulness and the impact of these skills on stress management. Limitations and challenges to sustainable practice were also identified.
Discussion:
Medical students are at high risk of psychological distress, depression, and suicidality. The health and well-being of doctors is key to supporting the quality and safety of patient care. More needs to be done to build a sustainable and resilience work force for the future.
