Abstract:
Cognitive behavioral therapies are widely used to treat a range of psychiatric and psychological problems, but the underlying assumptions and theories are firmly embedded in positivist and postpositivist ways of knowing, which privilege Eurocentric cultural perspectives. In this paper, we critically examine these underpinnings and offer multi-level recommendations for enhancing CBT's application to marginalized populations, with an emphasis on liberation and decolonial frameworks.
