Looping patchworks and imaginations in a concept: Building the patchwork of "organoid" in contemporary biotechnology

Abstract:
Organoids have become a central but contested notion across developmental biology, stem cell research, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. I argue that the term organoid functions not as a single, well-defined scientific kind but as a special kind of patchwork concept that I call looping patchwork concept: a coordination device whose stability depends on overlapping inferential patches distributed across material practices, ethical deliberations, and promissory imaginaries. Drawing on Hacking's looping kinds, Jasanoff's co-production framework, and recent philosophical work on patchwork concepts; I show how the same label anchors different research agendas while enabling interdisciplinary collaboration and governance. I illustrate this analysis with brief comparisons of the U.S. Multicellular Engineered Living Systems (MCELS) initiative and the Germany based REBIRTH (REgenerative BIology to Reconstructive Therapy) excellence cluster, showing how divergent emphases on engineering, therapy, and regulation produce different weightings of the concept's registers. Conceptualizing organoids as looping patchwork concepts with ethical and social relevance reframes definitional instability as an epistemic resource: conceptual flexibility facilitates coordination, legitimation, and the co-constitution of objects in the making. This way I propose the usage of a multilayer approach in concepts that are building entities of biotechnology.
