Abstract:
The integration of comprehensive self-care education with "Internet+" is considered highly beneficial in improving patients' self-care competencies. This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of a health education approach that integrates WeChat with peer education for patients undergoing day surgery of double-J stents implantation for ureteral calculi. The participants were randomly assigned to either a control group or an experimental group. The experimental group received health guidance through an WeChat integrated peer education model, while the control group received routine discharge instructions. Outcomes were assessed using the Ureteral Stent-Related Symptom Questionnaire (USSQ), the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ), and a Disease Self-Management Behavior Score. After the intervention, all dimensions of the USSQ in the WeChat integrated peer education group showed significant reductions and the BIPQ score was significantly lower than that the group without WeChat education (33.31 ± 1.805 vs. 45.01 ± 1.941). The WeChat integrated peer education increased the self-management behavior score (32.89 ± 0.959 vs. 25.30 ± 0.961) as well. Thus the WeChat integrated peer education model is effective in reducing discomfort associated with ureteral stent placement, mitigating negative illness perception and enhancing self-management behaviors.
