Upper airway obstruction associated with regional enteritis.

J H Kelly, W W Montgomery, M L Goodman

    Summary

Two patients experienced upper airway obstruction due to Crohn's disease (regional enteritis). This suggests Crohn's disease should be considered in diagnosing chronic laryngeal edema.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Otolaryngology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Regional enteritis, commonly known as Crohn's disease, is a chronic inflammatory condition.
    • Upper airway obstruction is a serious condition that can have various causes.

    Observation:

    • Two patients with Crohn's disease presented with symptoms of upper airway obstruction.
    • The obstruction was linked to the inflammatory and edematous processes of the disease.

    Findings:

    • Proposed mechanisms include cricoarytenoid joint involvement and extensive upper airway edema from submucosal disease.
    • No prior reports link upper airway obstruction to regional enteritis were found.

    Implications:

    • Crohn's disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of chronic laryngeal edema.
    • This highlights a potential, previously unrecognized complication of Crohn's disease.
