Reliability, acceptability, and access through teleconsultation in oral medicine: a scoping review

Objective:
The aim of this study was to map and synthesize the existing literature on the use of professional teleconsultation in oral medicine, focus on diagnostic reliability, acceptability, the need for in-person referrals, and access to specialized care.
Study Design:
A scoping review was conducted in databases up to March 2026, without language restrictions, in accordance with the methodology proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute for scoping reviews. Methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed, and a narrative synthesis was performed.
Results:
Twenty-five observational studies (cross-sectional, cohort, and diagnostic accuracy) were included, encompassing 20,787 patients evaluated, 24,074 images analyzed, and a total of 534 professionals participated. High diagnostic reliability was observed in most studies, with diagnostic agreement ranging from 55% to 100% among examiners. Patient acceptability reached up to 90%, while professional satisfaction was as high as 96.5%. Some included studies suggest that teleconsultation may reduce the need for referrals of up to 69.9% of cases reported. Additionally, teleconsultation appears to enhance access to diagnostics, with coverage extending to up to 52.5% of the assessed municipalities.
Conclusions:
Teleconsultation appears to be a reliable approach for diagnosing oral diseases and may improve timely access to specialized care.
