Identification and Characterization of a Chelatococcus Sp. DG-1 Strain Causing Catheter-Related Bloodstream Infection

Background:
All members of the genus Chelatococcus have been isolated from the environment and are considered to be environmental bacteria. Moreover, none of the species in this genus has been found in humans. Herein, we present a case study of a patient who successfully recovered from catheter-related bloodstream infection caused by Chelatococcus sp. DG-1 strain.
Case Presentation:
We report a case of catheter-related bloodstream infection caused by Chelatococcus sp. DG-1 strain following dialysis. A positive blood culture broth yielded white, dry, and firm colonies on blood agar plates, which were identified as Chelatococcus sp. by 16S rRNA sequencing. Ultimately, he recovered well from this infection after removal of the previous right internal jugular cuff catheter due to poor anti-infective efficacy.
Conclusion:
Patients with weakened immunity should pay close attention to the impact of environmental pathogens. A deep understanding of the pathogenic potential of Chelatococcus spp. the antimicrobial resistance mechanisms of these bacteria, and appropriate treatment strategies is of great clinical and research significance.
