Abstract:
Goto et al. in this issue use continuous lineage imaging to examine why only some fibroblasts become induced hepatocyte-like cells. The study suggests that hepatic reprogramming follows a hybrid elite-stochastic model: early asymmetric division produces elite-like lineages, and subsequent mitotic activity and chance determine which descendants ultimately complete conversion.
