Modalities of Integration in Psychotherapy: Addressing Loneliness Among Older Adults

Loneliness has emerged as one of the most pressing public health challenges in older adulthood, exerting profound effects on mental, cognitive, and general medical health. Defined as the subjective perception of social disconnection, loneliness is associated with depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, cognitive decline, cardiovascular disease, and increased mortality. Despite decades of intervention research, the multifaceted nature of loneliness remains a challenge to clinicians and researchers. With this review, the author aimed to provide a conceptual overview of how modalities of psychotherapy integration can inform the clinical understanding and treatment of loneliness among older adults.

Relevant literature was identified through targeted searches in major academic databases, including PubMed and Scopus. Five principal modalities of psychotherapy integration-theoretical integration, assimilative integration, technical eclecticism, common factors integration, and metatheoretical unification-were reviewed, and their relevance for geropsychology was critically analyzed.

The review suggests that integrative psychotherapy offers a promising framework for conceptualizing and treating loneliness among older adults. By situating loneliness within an integrative framework, clinicians can better address its developmental, relational, cognitive, and existential dimensions.

This review highlights not only the conceptual strengths of integrative psychotherapy but also its clinical applicability in promoting belonging, resilience, and meaning in older adulthood. Future directions include refining integrative models specific to loneliness, advancing process research, and embedding training in geropsychology within integrative paradigms.
