Introduction:
Tuberculosis (TB) still remains a major public health problem in developing countries, particularly among patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The main objective was to describe the different locations of tuberculosis in HIV-infected and immunocompromised patients.
Methods:
This was a 24-month retrospective and descriptive study, from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2021 in the Infectious and Tropical Diseases department of the Sylvanus OLYMPIO University Hospital Center in Lomé, focusing on co-infected patients TB/HIV hospitalized.
Results:
Two hundred and eighty-nine patients were hospitalized in the department during the study period, including 211 patients infected with HIV, representing a frequency of HIV infection of 73%. There were 46 TB/HIV co-infected patients, representing a frequency of 21.8%. Their average age was 43.08 years with a male predominance (n=27). Four patients had a history of tuberculosis, including 1 patient in whom anti-tuberculosis treatment was not completed. There were 31 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis and 24 cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Nine patients presented with multifocal tuberculosis. The average CD4 count was 151.2 cells/µl with extremes of 2 cells/µl to 495 cells/µl. Forty-five patients received first-line anti-tuberculosis treatment and 1 patient was treated with the second line.
Conclusion:
Pulmonary localization of tuberculosis predominates in TB/HIV co-infected patients.
