Abstract:
Capsulotomy in hip arthroscopy is essential for optimal visualization and instrument maneuverability. Commonly used capsulotomy techniques, such as interportal and T-type capsulotomy, result in damage to the iliofemoral ligament, a major stabilizer of the hip joint. The periportal technique, a relatively novel capsulotomy technique, involves the creation of 2 to 3 relatively small portals, thereby preserving the capsuloligamentous complex while allowing for the passage of an arthroscope and instruments into the joint space. Emerging evidence suggests that the periportal approach leads to improved clinical outcomes in patients undergoing hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome.
