A scoping review on social isolation in patients with intestinal stomas

Objective:
Systematically sort out the psychological experiences, influencing factors, and intervention measures of social isolation in patients with intestinal stomas, providing evidence-based support for subsequent research.
Methods:
Search for relevant studies on social isolation in patients with enterostomy in CNKI, Wanfang Database, VIP Database, China Biomedical Literature Database, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL database, with the search period from database inception to June 4, 2026. Two researchers screened, organized, and summarized the literature based on inclusion and exclusion criteria.
Results:
A total of 22 articles were included. The experiences mainly involved impaired social function, psychological distress, and a lack of support resources; influencing factors were divided into four aspects: demographic characteristics, disease factors, psychological factors, and family and social factors; intervention measures included narrative care, acceptance and commitment therapy, health education, and other content.
Conclusion:
The social isolation status of patients with intestinal stomas is influenced by multiple factors. In the future, localized assessment tools should be developed to accurately identify the level of social isolation, helping patients return to society as soon as possible.
