Kerosene Chemical Burn at Khumbhu Icefall: Report of Two Cases

Kerosene chemical burns are uncommon but can result in serious injury, particularly among high-altitude porters who carry fuel through difficult terrain and endure prolonged exposure or contact. We describe 2 cases of high-altitude porters who developed chemical burns to the lower back and gluteal region following leakage of kerosene while traversing the Khumbu Icefall in the Everest region. Such injuries highlight the need for awareness among expedition doctors and high-altitude medical personnel, as early recognition, along with appropriate wound care, is critical in resource-limited mountain settings.
