Maternal Sepsis for the Intensivist: Recognition, ICU Triage, and Pregnancy-Adapted Management
1Pulmonary Center, Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, Boston, MA, USA.
Abstract:
Sepsis in pregnancy and the puerperium is a leading, and often preventable, cause of maternal critical illness. This narrative review summarizes pregnancy-adapted physiology, epidemiology, clinical recognition, intensive care unit triage, and management, with particular emphasis on decision-making around ICU admission and the practical delivery of organ support for intensivists who do not routinely manage obstetric patients.
