Human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype distribution varies regionally, influencing vaccination and screening strategies. This molecular characterisation study determined HPV prevalence and circulating genotypes among 225 women (≥30 y) attending gynaecological clinics in Karad, Satara district, Maharashtra. HPV DNA was detected in 14 participants (6.2%) using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing. Identified genotypes included HPV-6, HPV-59, HPV-66, and HPV-81, indicating circulation of both low-risk and high-risk types. Multiple sexual partners showed the strongest association with HPV infection. These preliminary findings highlight the need for region-specific genotype surveillance to inform prevention strategies.

Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms-SNPs

A single nucleotide polymorphism or SNP is a single nucleotide variation at a specific genomic position in a large population. It is the most prevalent type of sequence variation found in the human genome. Point mutations that occur in more than 1% of the population qualify as SNPs. These are present once every 1000 nucleotides on an average in the human genome. Replacement of a purine with another purine (A/G) or a pyrimidine with another pyrimidine (C/T) is known as a transition. In contrast,...
Cancer Prevention02:59

Cancer Prevention

Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

Genital Herpes01:23

Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection primarily caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), though herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is increasingly implicated in genital infections, particularly among younger populations. Transmission occurs mainly through sexual contact, with asymptomatic viral shedding serving as a major route of spread. This characteristic makes HSV-2 difficult to control at a population level, as individuals may unknowingly transmit the virus even in the...
