Epidemiological and clinicopathological profile of pancytopenia: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:
Broad etiology of pancytopenia also makes it regionally heterogeneous, requiring a multifaceted clinico-haematological assessment. ence, this cross-sectional study at MGM medical college and Maharaja Yeshwantrao hospital in Indore involved 200 patients whose CBC, peripheral smear, LFT/RFT, vitamin B12/folate levels and bone marrow were measured within a period of 12 months and had to be above 15 years old with pancytopenia (not under chemotherapy/radiotherapy). Severe anaemia (53.5%), moderate leucopenia (34%), severe thrombocytopenia (25.5%) and 31-40 year-olds had the highest (21.5%) were severe cases; pallor (60%) and dyspnoea (32.5%) were most common. Top causes were vitamin B12 deficiency (28.5%), hypersplenism (12%) and dimorphic anaemia (10.5%) and gender-B12 association had a significant value (p=0.028). Thus, the major reversible cause is nutrition deficiencies, especially the vitamin B12 deficiency, which should be screened and supplemented by communities.
