Treatment of Callithrix jacchus Using Platynosomum sp. 30cH Biotherapeutic: A Case Report

Background:
Platynosomiasis is a disease caused by a biliary fluke, which can lead to chronic weight loss and liver damage, contributing to declining health and high mortality rates in non-human primates. The aim of this study was to describe the treatment of platynosomiasis using a Platynosomum sp. 30cH biotherapeutic.
Methods:
A female Callithrix jacchus presented loss of appetite, abdominal distension, pain, and diarrhea. Ultrasound examination revealed findings suggestive of platynosomiasis. The treatment with biotherapeutic Platynosomum sp. 30cH was started, and one globule was given twice a day. Ultrasound monitoring was carried out monthly, and the condition improved during a period of 90 days.
Results:
Ultrasound monitoring was carried out monthly, and the condition improved in 90 days with the biotherapeutic Platynosomum sp. 30 cH. The MOdified NARanjo Criteria for Homeopathy (MONARCH) score was +10, suggesting a causal link between the use of homeopathic therapy and clinical outcome.
Conclusion:
Biotherapy is an option to be considered for the treatment of platynosomiasis in non-human primates.
