Background:
Preference-based, person-centered care is essential to improving quality of life for older adults living in nursing homes (NHs). Communicating the rationale to implement evidence-based practices to policy makers and NH administrators amid competing priorities is challenging.
Objective:
This article describes an initiative that developed two communication tools-a value proposition statement and a policy brief-to promote adoption of the evidence-based Preferences for Everyday Living Inventory (PELI) in NHs.
Methods:
The PELI is a validated assessment that elicits NH residents' daily living preferences to inform care planning. Guided by knowledge translation, this project aimed to bridge research evidence and practice realities. To develop the value proposition statement, we identified the primary audience, developed a draft, and sought feedback from professionals to create a final version and accompanying policy brief.
Results:
A value proposition statement and a policy brief were created to communicate the return on investment of preference-based care and identify policy levers to incentivize implementation.
Discussion:
This initiative demonstrates how applied gerontological research can inform system-level change by supporting moving of preference-based, person-centered care from evidence to everyday practice. The tools serve complementary purposes, engaging providers and policymakers to communicate evidence into practice and policy.
