Multi-Port Vacuum Assembly Device Designed for Simplified Point-of-Need Chemical and Biological Analyses Using Mass

Abstract:
A persistent challenge in analytical chemistry is the effective analysis of all components in a sample mixture. For mass spectrometric analysis, this begins with ionization. Over the past several decades, extensive research has been conducted to enhance sample cleanliness and optimize various ionization techniques. The proof-of-feasibility analytical technology presented herein pertains to a vacuum chamber assembly equipped with easily accessible multiple ports specifically designed for different mass spectrometry applications. These ports, inter alia, facilitate atmospheric-pressure ionization, such as ESI and APCI, as well as newer methods, including inlet ionization, vacuum ionization, and ambient ionization, thus enabling the ready selection of the most suitable ionization/analysis methods on a single mass spectrometer without requiring instrument venting. This capability is enabled by a unique multiport vacuum interface assembly that accommodates a diverse range of functions to enhance ionization and facilitate the transfer of analyte ions and charged particles into a mass analyzer. The ports may serve auxiliary functions that expand and improve the available ionization methodologies or provide features that are not typically accessible. This technology demonstrates the potential to maximize the information content extractable directly from a sample in a timely and cost-effective manner, thus promising extensive applications across various fields, including medicine and national security.
