Queer intimacy under constraint in Ruth Vanita's A Slight Angle

This paper investigates queer intimacy under constraint in Ruth Vanita's A Slight Angle, a novel that reimagines same-sex desire within colonial India's disciplinary structures of pedagogy, domesticity, and social regulation. Drawing on Foucauldian theories of disciplinary power, Ahmed's queer phenomenology of spatial orientation, and Halberstam's framework of queer temporality, it examines how constraint paradoxically generates attachment and belonging. Through interpretive qualitative methodology, specifically close textual analysis of minor gestures, gazes, silences, sensory details, and liminal encounters, the study reveals that classrooms, letters, seaside homes, and thresholds function as sites where regulation and desire mutually constitute one another. Key findings indicate that queer life endures not despite but through colonial mechanisms, transforming control into affective memory and resilient kinship networks. These intimacies persist as emotional legacies, informing contemporary queer belonging amid India's uneven legal and social landscapes.
