Abstract:
Orthodontics and prosthodontics in orthognathic surgery In complex care, such as for growth disorders and congenital anomalies, multidisciplinary collaboration is essential and begins even before the actual treatment starts. Systematic evaluation of dental, skeletal and soft tissue parameters prevents the correction of one aspect from creating new discrepancies in another area. Through backwards planning, the desired fi nal outcome is fi rst determined collaboratively, after which the treatment process is mapped out step by step in reverse. The process consists of 5 phases: 1. determining desired outcomes and psychosocial context, and collaborative decision-making; 2. pre-operative orthodontics and any necessary dental preparation; 3. surgical planning and osteotomy; 4. fi nishing; 5. follow-up. To prevent misunderstandings and suboptimal outcomes, clear communication, alignment of roles, and shared responsibility are crucial. Digital planning and multidisciplinary consultation support predictable, aesthetic and functional results. Within this multidisciplinary pathway, an orthodontist, a maxillofacial surgeon and a prosthodontically trained dentist each contribute equally to the overall treatment plan.
