Removal of a Posteriorly Luxated Lens Using Pars Plana Vitrectomy and Perfluorocarbon Liquid: A Case Report

Objective:
To report a case of canine posterior lens luxation in which the intact lens was successfully floated using perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL) combined with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and subsequently removed.
Animal Studied:
A client-owned 7-year-old castrated female Italian Greyhound presented with rapidly progressive bilateral posterior lens luxation.
Treatment And Progression:
In the right eye, via a three-port 25-gauge pars plana approach, the vitreous was removed and PFCL was injected beneath the luxated lens to float the intact lens from the retinal surface to the pupillary plane. The lens was subsequently removed by intracapsular lens extraction through a limbal incision using a cryoprobe. At the final 6-month follow-up examination, vision was preserved, and no retinal detachment or other significant postoperative complications were observed.
Conclusions:
In this case, combining PPV and PFCL was an effective technique for managing posterior lens luxation and enabled successful removal of the intact luxated lens.
