Recommendations for the implementation of the transition process in celiac disease

The transition from childhood and adolescence to adulthood is a crucial stage in the care and management of patients with chronic diseases diagnosed during childhood. This is the case for celiac disease (CD). The transition period involves physiological, psychological, sociofamilial, and healthcare-related changes, not only from a clinical perspective but also from an administrative standpoint. These changes may hinder adherence to a gluten-free diet among young individuals with celiac disease. To facilitate healthcare delivery for children and young people with CD during this transition period, the available literature was reviewed and a set of recommendations was developed by consensus, with the aim of being applicable across the different healthcare systems in Spain. A working group was established consisting of a scientific committee and an expert panel made up of adult gastroenterologists, family physicians, and pediatric gastroenterologists from different scientific societies. Following a review of the literature, the scientific committee drafted 15 recommendations for implementing the transition process. These recommendations were subsequently evaluated by the expert panel using the Delphi methodology, reaching a high or very high level of agreement for all recommendations.
