Alcohol-induced mortality among Asian Americans, 2018-2022

Aggregate reporting obscures substantial heterogeneity in alcohol-induced mortality among Asian Americans. Using CDC WONDER Multiple Cause of Death data (2018-2022), we examined alcohol-induced deaths across non-Hispanic Asian American subgroups by cause, age, sex, and year, with Bonferroni correction applied. Asian Indians showed the highest proportional mortality for Other Alcohol-Induced Causes (2.50%), for mental and behavioral disorders due to alcohol (1.12%), and among adults aged 15-34 years (8.47%), the only measure exceeding the corresponding U.S. rate. Male-to-female ratios were highest among Vietnamese (8.31) and Asian Indians (7.46), while Chinese and Japanese populations remained lowest and most stable. These disparities underscore the need for disaggregated surveillance and culturally tailored prevention.
