Estimation of total annual average internal dose due to alpha emitters in children's chip samples in Iraqi markets

Abstract:
This work was directed towards studying the alpha emitters (222Rn, 226Ra, and 238U) in 14 different Children's Chip samples that are produced locally and imported. Chip Samples were collected from markets in Al-Najaf city. Alpha emitters were analyzed in a laboratory, using a CR-39 detector. Also, the research aims to calculate the Total Annual Average Internal Dose (Total AAIED) due to Alpha Emitters. These values lead us to estimate the exposure of the population to the internal radiation by ingestion of children's chip samples in Iraqi markets. The average values for 222Rn, 226Ra, and 238U for all samples were found to be within the worldwide range for radioactivity in food. Radiological assessments have subsequently shown that total values of Total AAIED for individuals who consume these food samples were found to fall under the upper limits set by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (0.1 mSv/y). Overall, it can be reasonably determined that the approach, which has been applied compared to other literature data, indicates good performance. It is also concluded that the chip samples that were examined are safe for human consumption, as their radioactivity levels were lower than the maximum permitted level.
