Standardized Nursing Terminologies in Computerized Systems: A Bibliometric Analysis of Global Research Trends

The integration of standardized nursing terminologies (SNTs) into computerized systems represents a major step toward enhancing the visibility, interoperability, and quality of nursing documentation. To better understand how this field has evolved, this study provides a bibliometric overview of global research examining the use and implementation of SNTs in computerized environments. A rapid review of the Web of Science Core Collection was conducted to identify peer-reviewed publications up to August 2025. Data were analyzed using Bibliometrix and Biblioshiny to perform descriptive, citation, and network analyses, complemented by a quantitative synthesis of SNTs and computerized systems reported in the included studies. A total of 258 articles were included. Publication activity has grown steadily over the past 3 decades, with an average of 7.4 publications per year. NANDA-I, ICNP, and the Omaha System were the most frequently studied terminologies, while electronic health records were the predominant computerized context. The United States, Brazil, and Korea were leading contributors to this research field. Overall, findings reveal a growing but uneven body of evidence. Despite increasing adoption, major challenges remain regarding semantic interoperability, cross-system integration, and long-term sustainability of SNT implementation in digital health infrastructures.
