Abstract:
A 90-day feeding study in rats was conducted to evaluate the potential adverse effects of dehydrated stalk material from genetically modified sugarcane event CTC175-A. Five groups of Wistar rats were fed nutritionally balanced diets (per GB 14924.3-2010): a basal diet control, two non-GMO sugarcane control groups (5% and 10% dehydrated stalk), and two GM sugarcane groups (5% and 10% dehydrated CTC175-A stalk). No mortality or clinical signs of toxicity were observed. Body weight, weight gain, food intake and utilization, serum biochemistry, hematology, urinalysis, organ weights, and organ-to-body weight ratios did not show any treatment-related, toxicologically significant differences between GM and non-GMO groups. Weekly fluctuations in food intake and utilization were sporadic, showed no dose-response, and were not considered adverse. No histopathological changes attributable to the test material were found. Under the conditions of this 90-day rat study, dietary inclusion of up to 10% dehydrated CTC175-A sugarcane stalk did not produce any adverse effects. These findings contribute to the safety evaluation of this event but do not, by themselves, establish the overall safety of foods or feeds derived from it.
