Abstract:
Cold-active cellulases have traditionally been discovered in persistently cold environments, but examples from autolytic mushrooms, gut microbiomes, and biomass-decomposition systems suggest they are not exclusive adaptations to chronic cold. We propose that diverse ecological selection regimes may also favor enzymes that relieve catalytic bottlenecks.
