Enviro-friendly magnesium silicate/activated carbon nanocomposites for efficient CO2 capture

Abstract:
Activated carbon (AC) was composited with magnesium silicate (MgSil) nanotubes to improve its CO2 adsorption capability. The MgSil-AC nanocomposites were studied for their structural, morphological, and textural features and the findings indicated that the addition of magnesium silicate enhanced the thermal stability and textural properties of AC. A surface area of 768 m2 g-1 was obtained for the composite comprising of 20 wt% magnesium silicate, which also exhibited the highest adsorption efficacy, 40.3 cm3 g-1 at ambient conditions, due to synergistic impact of magnesium silicate's intrinsic CO2 affinity and the elevated surface area and porosity of AC.
