Abstract:
Despite substantial progress in malaria control during the early 2000s, global gains have plateaued. This review summarizes recent advancements in malaria prevention, with a focus on newly deployed and emerging interventions. The licensure of two preerythrocytic vaccines, RTS,S/AS01 and R21/Matrix-M, represents a major milestone, providing partial but meaningful protection against clinical malaria, especially when integrated with other control strategies. Chemoprevention strategies have expanded and diversified, enabling more tailored protection across populations and transmission settings. Advancements in vector control such as next-generation insecticide-treated nets and improved surveillance tools aim to address insecticide resistance and evolving transmission dynamics. These developments underscore the importance of layered, context-specific malaria prevention strategies that integrate vaccines, chemoprevention, and vector control. Sustained innovation, funding, and implementation will be essential to accelerate progress toward malaria control and elimination.
