Cepstral Analysis of Voice in Children Residing at High Altitude

Objectives:
The purpose of the present investigation was to survey the CPP of vowel sounds and compare, using an acoustic analyzer, objective data obtained from children in high-altitude areas with low altitude control.
Methods:
Participants were divided into a high-altitude group(residing at Tibetan Plateau) and a control group. Each participant was recorded phonating the sustained vowel /a/. All audio samples were subjected to acoustic analysis using the Praat software. The vowels were analyzed acoustically by the measurement of cepstral peak prominence (CPP) and fundamental frequency (f0).
Results:
Our analysis revealed lower values of CPP and higher values of f0 in the high-altitude group in comparison with the control group.
Conclusions:
Results of analysis revealed lower CPP and higher f0 values in the high-altitude group compared with those in the control group. Lower CPPs in the high-altitude group could be explained by the possible coupling of an arid climate and abnormal tension in the laryngeal muscles.
