1Emeritus Professor of Dental Public Health and Dental Historian, London, United Kingdom. sgelbier@aol.co.uk.
Abstract:
George Hankey became a consultant dental surgeon years before the term oral surgeon came into use. He was appointed to the London Hospital at a time when oral disease was rife. There were no full-time dental lecturers, so he became a leading teacher. Hankey had a particular interest in the care of patients with temporomandibular problems. Already a member of the Territorial Army, he became a Lieutenant Colonel in charge of a Field Ambulance group in World War II, for which he received an 'Order of the British Empire'. He was captured and spent the rest of the war in a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp.
