VIABAHN stent grafts for traumatic arterial injury: A case series

Objective:
To describe a single-center experience using VIABAHN stent grafts (W. L. Gore & Associates) for endovascular repair of traumatic arterial injuries.
Methods:
We performed a retrospective case series of adults who underwent repair of acute traumatic arterial injury using VIABAHN stent grafts at a single tertiary center from 2014 to 2025. Demographics, injury characteristics, procedural details, and outcomes were collected from the electronic medical record. Outcomes included technical success, limb salvage, complications, reintervention, mortality, and primary patency at last follow-up.
Results:
Nine patients were included. Median age was 47 years (interquartile range, 28-58), and six patients (67%) were male. Penetrating trauma accounted for five injuries (56%). Injured vessels included the superficial femoral artery in six patients, the popliteal artery in five patients, and the axillary artery in one patient. Technical success was achieved in all patients (100%), and limb salvage was achieved in eight patients (89%). Reintervention was required in three patients (33%), and thrombosis occurred in two patients (22%). There were no bleeding complications, infections, or deaths. At a median follow-up of 24 months (interquartile range, 9.75-34.5), primary patency was maintained in six of seven evaluable patients (86%).
Conclusions:
VIABAHN stent graft repair of traumatic arterial injuries was feasible in this small single-center series, with high technical success, favorable limb salvage, and acceptable midterm patency. Larger studies are needed to better define long-term durability and optimal patient selection.
