Objective:
Elevated postprandial triglyceride (TG) is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. This study investigated the acute effect of whole-body resistance exercise with different rest interval durations, but identical volume and intensity, on postprandial TG concentrations.
Methods:
Fifteen healthy men (age: 23.1 ± 3.4 years; BMI: 24 ± 3 kg/m2) completed two exercise trials and one control (rest) trial in a randomised crossover design, each separated by a 7-day washout. On day 1, participants performed resistance exercises with either 30-s (short rest) or 180-s (long rest) intervals between sets or rested throughout the day. Both resistance exercise trials employed identical exercises, sets, repetitions and external load. On day 2, 17.25 h later, participants consumed a standardised test meal (0.56 g fat per kg of body mass), followed by blood sampling at baseline and 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 4 and 6 h postprandially.
Results:
Participants lifted a total volume of 6433 ± 1554 kg on each exercise trial. However, no significant differences were observed in fasting (P = 0.061) or postprandial (main effects of trial, P = 0.147; trial-by-time interaction P = 0.058) TG concentrations among trials.
Conclusion:
Whole-body resistance exercise with different rest intervals did not reduce postprandial TG concentration in resistance-trained young men.
