    Summary

    Smoking significantly increases the risk of developing malignant-phase hypertension and leads to a poorer prognosis. Hypertensive smokers are five times more likely to develop this severe condition.

    Background:

    • Malignant-phase hypertension is a severe form of hypertension with high mortality.
    • The role of smoking in the development and prognosis of malignant-phase hypertension requires further elucidation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between smoking habits and the incidence of malignant-phase hypertension.
    • To determine the impact of smoking on the mortality rates of patients with malignant-phase hypertension.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective comparison of smoking habits in 82 malignant-phase hypertension patients versus control groups.
    • Matched controls included patients with non-malignant hypertension and a general population survey.
    • Survival analysis and correlation with renal function (serum creatinine) were performed.
